Nissan: A Legacy of Quality
The Nissan name goes back to the 1930s, though its legacy dates back even further to the first DAT car produced in 1914 in Tokyo, Japan. Several DAT cars and trucks were produced before the brand was named Datson, which later became Datsun. DAT eventually became a part of Nihon Sangyo, a Japanese holding company that was abbreviated as "Nissan" for the Tokyo Stock Exchange––in 1934, the Nissan Motor Company was officially launched and began producing impressive vehicles. In the decades that followed, the name "Nissan" was used in Japan, while the Datsun name was used for cars exported around the world. That is why early models here in Canada were sold as Datsun cars.
It took about 30 years from Nissan's founding until it officially began to expand here; a couple dealerships were around in the early 1960s, but Nissan Automobile Canada did not open until 1965, with headquarters in Vancouver. Within the first year, more than 80 Nissan dealerships opened across Canada, and Datsun models proved immediately popular. When the Oil Crisis hit in the 1970s, more drivers than ever were looking for fuel-efficient cars, and the Datsun 1200 was the most efficient model on the road. In the early 1980s, Nissan finally began using its official name for markets outside of Japan, leaving "Datsun" behind, and its headquarters here in Canada moved to Ontario.
Throughout the decades since the "Nissan" name became widespread throughout Canada, the manufacturer has proven the quality of its vehicles time and again.
